Trying To Look Spiritual – John Bidaurreta

I heard a story from a famous Christian author and speaker who was cleaning up his house before some Christian recording artists were stopping by for a visit. As he made his way to different areas in his house, he came to the room that he called “The Prayer Closet” and decided to change his strategy. The room that he and his family had dedicated to prayer and worship looked too clean and organized. So he quickly hashed out a plan to make it look like it was getting steady use. He did not want to seem unspiritual to his guests. So he started with the two dirty coffee cups that he had gathered elsewhere in house and left them both there. He then took Bibles and commentaries from the shelf and laid them on out on the desk open, to look like he was in the middle of some deep theological study. He grabbed some chord charts from the worship binder and placed them on music stand and finally even took some of the pillows that were neatly stacked up in the corner and placed them on the floor to give the impression that he had been on his knees before the Lord. Later that day after his friends had left he realized how silly he had been.

Matthew 6:5-6 (NKJV)

5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.[a]

Jesus has called each of us personally to pray and seek His face and find Him in the secret place. This is not something we do to receive the praises of man, but we do this out of relationship to the one that has saved us and set us free. If may have been a while for some of us, but now is the time to reengage, and to truly make spending time with Jesus a priority.

Lord Jesus right know we ask you to help each one of us find a place where we can go and meet You in the secret place. Help us to set aside time to seek You first, to worship You in Spirit and in Truth. Let us boldly come before your thrown of grace and minister directly to You.

Psalm 91:1(NKJV)

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High

Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”
