“From now on don’t go into any other field to glean – stay right here in this one.” These were the words of Boaz to Ruth who had providently found herself working in the field of her kinsman redeemer. As her kinsman redeemer, Boaz would watch over her for good.
Specifically, Ruth 2:8-9 says, 8Then Boaz said to Ruth, “You will listen, my daughter, will you not? Do not go to glean in another field, nor go from here, but stay close by my young women. 9Let your eyes be on the field which they reap, and go after them. Have I not commanded the young men not to touch you? And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink from what the young men have drawn.”
If Ruth would listen to Boaz, she would be given provision and protection. Her eyes were to steadily gaze in the field she was in and not to be looking for greener pastures. Other fields and places may look tempting. They lure with promises of being more fruitful, easier, and even more fun. We are all prone to be drawn away and move into another field other than that which our Lord has provided for us. Even the most mature and dedicated among us can be tempted. This why Jesus taught us to pray, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”. We can pray to our merciful High Priest that he would not allow our feet to wander, to stay planted, and to deliver us from evil influences; things that cause harm, pain, and disease.
It’s necessary that we learn to stay in God’s field. The disciples of Christ were to come after Him, to literally follow Him where he went. We must learn the same – yielding ourselves to His direction, learning how to surrender our will and align it with His. It’s imperative that we begin to comprehend His kingdom as He spoke of it in terms of a sower and soils, seeds and birds, weeds and wheat, and a hidden treasure all within a field.
His field is the one you really want because He is in it. As Ruth would soon discover, there was more importance than the field itself. There was a treasure within the field – the owner. Ultimately, our attachment would not be to a position or possession, but to a person, the Lord Jesus Himself. Stay in His field.
