The Command to Love – Michaela Baltazar

The most important thing to God is for us to love, that is why when the Pharisee asked Jesus what the most important commandment in the law of Moses is, He said:

…“‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40 NLT LoveGod_LovePeople

These two commandments, love God with all your heart, soul and mind and love your neighbor as yourself embody everything. It’s something like this: You  need to take a 200 item test, and if you get the first 2 right, you get credit for the whole test. Or you owe a lot of money and you need to make 100 payments. But if you make the first 2 payments you get released from your whole debt. Isn’t that a good deal? It’s not like God is overlooking the other commandments, but these two encapsulate everything else. You are not going to steal from your neighbor if you love them. God does not want us to focus on keeping the “thou shall not” rather He wants us to focus on the “thou shall”. A wife does not have to keep telling her husband not to cheat on her; if the husband is busy loving her she does not have to worry about him cheating. If we get these two commandments right, we are on the right track.

Loving God and others is a command – If God commands it, it must be within our power to accomplish it; it must be controllable. Love is beyond emotions or feelings. It is a choice that we have to make every day. Even if we have been hurt, offended or wronged, we still need to obey the call of God to love. Jesus is our ultimate example, demonstrating His great love for us by dying on the cross. We are able to love like Him because He lives in us.

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1-2 NIV

We need to live a life filled with love because I believe what fills us controls us. If we are filled with love, everything we do will flow out of love.
