A few years ago I became passionate to know every single thing possible about the Holy Spirit, and to begin my self-education, I started a detailed study of the Spirit in scripture. I gathered my tools, the Bible and Biblestudytools.com, and searched every mention of the word “Spirit”: I desired a full understanding. I compiled and reviewed thirty different bible translations as it related to that verse. I carefully read each translation, pieced-together the most personally impactful elements, and then incorporated all the descriptions/attributes of the Spirit from each, individual translation into one, modified super verse. Through this slow and tedious process, I felt my own spirit growing from this daily enlightening process; His words saturated my heart.
Again and again, wonder and awe struck me to my core, overwhelming me with the existence of such grace: the Holy Spirit does not discriminate against whom he operates through. There is no bias. He desires to enter and work through every willing participant. To see examples in the scripture: in Numbers 11:6 the Spirit sought out Eldad and Medad, who were two chosen leaders that didn’t even make it to the church service; 1 Samuel 10:10 the Spirit filled King Saul spoke prophetically; 1 Samuel 16:13 David was anointed and the Spirit came on him mightily while still a young man, Judges 14:6 Samson was given supernatural power to overcome the enemy.
I especially fell in love with how the Spirit transformed Samson in Judges 14:6 NLT as read, “At that moment the Spirit of the LORD powerfully took control of him and he ripped the lion’s jaws apart with his bare hands. He did it as easily as if it were a young goat.” Other translations use the terms/ words: in power, mightily, came upon, entered him. My personal favorite is that the spirit prospereth him (Samson). The Holy Spirit met the human Samson, and manifested the entirety of his power in a physical way. The image of the torn lion’s jaws highlights His desire to use us for His Glory; this image is forever burned in my mind.
This is just one wonderful testimony o encourage us that we too can be filled abundantly. I encourage you to seek the Spirit: we have an unlimited access to Him and to His tremendous power and blessings that come with his infilling. We have been given a tremendous gift, but most importantly a gift that requires action: we must desire and do. It is one thing to study, appreciate, and know about the Holy Spirit, but another thing entirely, and more importantly, to let him operate daily in my life. As I/we surrender more and more to his influx, there is an inverse of an outpouring of his miracles through our bodies and hearts to the world around us, if we actively seek it. Joy, peace, and love are created to radiate forcefully from our beings, leading to opportunities for healing, witnessing, and leading people to Christ, the ultimate goal of sharing true love.
We are on life’s incredible journey of learning how to allow the Spirit to enter and pour out of us. Let’s be bold and let his Spirit reign in our lives: open ourselves and rapidly move towards Him, deciding to live our lives in an anointed way.
In future blogs I look forward to sharing strategies on hearing the Sprit’s prompting and on taking action to impact others for the Kingdom.
